After rebuttals from a leading Muslim group, the already-provocative ads imploring Metro riders to “Defeat Jihad” are about to get a whole lot more incendiary.
In the latest response to the Metro ads, mounted by the anti-Muslim blogger Pamela Geller’s American Freedom Defense Initiative, the Council on American-Islamic Relations bought ad space featuring a girl in a hijab accompanied by the Quran verse “Show forgiveness, speak for justice and avoid the ignorant.”
Well, Geller is none too impressed with CAIR’s 16-foot banners that are going up this week at the Glenmont, Georgia Avenue-Petworth and U Street Metro stations. So the American Freedom Defense Initiative’s next round of advertisements are going to go much harder than the black background with red, white and blue text. How?
With 9/11, that’s how.
On her blog, Geller unveiled a new ad design that pairs the indelible sight of a Boeing 767 crashing into the World Trade Center with a Quran quote of her own choosing. Geller is leaving it up to her readers to choose which jihad- or sharia-themed line to include.
Although Metro tried to delay and even block the placement of the American Freedom Defense Initiative’s original advertising campaign, a federal judge eventually ordered the transit agency to install the posters. The transit agency doesn’t expect to put up the same fight this time around, Metro spokesman Dan Stessel tells DCist in an email.
As for Geller’s mining of the Quran and associating the Muslim holy book with 9/11, she says it could be an open-ended campaign. “This will go on for years,” she tells City Paper.Show
